THE MOMENT THE BACHELOR FRANCHISE LOST ITS SOUL
In the quiet week after the Oscars, one story dominated the entertainment and celebrity news cycle: the cancellation of the next season of ABC’s The Bachelorette. Many people don’t like reality TV and many don’t watch The Bachelorette but this story is intriguing in so many ways, revealing significant shifts in both the entertainment industry and societal values. The decision underscores a high-stakes reckoning regarding brand safety, the acceptability of reality stars, and the decline of traditional television audiences. In a positive light it shows us that society has a low tolerance of domestic abuse.
Taylor Frankie Paul’s story illustrates that there are blurred lines around what makes someone a celebrity and the shifting understanding of what’s acceptable in our reality tv diet and that we are now at a crossroads where we demand both high drama and authentic moral accountability from our unscripted content. This week I’m starting the newsletter with the smaller stories in case you don’t want to read about the Bachelorette story but I would encourage you to read it, it’s a captivating story of our times and I hope I explain to you why it’s compelling and give you some insider perspective from covering this franchise for all but one of its seasons (24 years).
CONTROVERSIAL OPINION: I LIKE JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE MORE AFTER SEEING HIS DUI ARREST FOOTAGE
Justin Timberlake from the footage released by police
I know I shouldn’t probably say the above headline out loud but I just did. This newsletter is about being honest and true about celebrities. Obviously it's severely wrong that Justin Timberlake drank alcohol and drove, there is no argument against that. But he has publicly apologized and taken responsibility by pleading guilty to a lesser charge of driving while ability impaired. He called his actions a "mistake," expressed disappointment in himself, and warned others not to drive after even one drink.
However Timberlake attempted to block the release of the June 2024 DWI arrest footage, arguing it would cause "irreparable" damage to his reputation, cause embarrassment, and invade his privacy. His legal team sued to stop the release, citing that the eight-hour footage, which included intimate details inside his vehicle and the police station, would subject him to public ridicule.
The footage captures him in a vulnerable and unsteady state and he is seen stumbling while attempting to walk heel-to-toe in a straight line. He also appears to have difficulty following instructions for the tandem gait and one-leg stand tests. He explicitly tells officers, "I’m a little nervous" and "My heart’s racing". He also remarks that the sobriety tests “are like really hard tests". Timberlake remained polite and cooperative with the officers throughout the encounter.
Yes, he’s had to endure some viral jokes and memes but ultimately this footage makes him seem relatable, respectful, polite and a nice guy who made a stupid mistake. He came across much better than most stars who have been arrested in police footage like Reese "Do you know my name?" Witherspoon, Karen Hugar and Mary Lou Retton. This is an improvement on his image before this which was of a tired Golden Boy of pop who was a bit of a brat who failed to attend hearings in person. Yes he made a mistake but it shows sometimes transparency is the best way to go in times of trouble.
USHER & BIEBER’S ALTERCATION & GOSSIP POST AI
The AI generated image that has gone viral following reports of an altercation between Usher and Justin Bieber
This week a couple of folks forwarded me this photo of Usher and Justin Bieber in an aggressive confrontation at the Oscars and asked if it was real. These are clever folks who have worked adjacent to the entertainment industry for years. 50 Cent even reposted the photo of the seemingly tense moment as he frequently posts commentary related to Bieber and Usher’s connection to Diddy.
AI is catching everyone out in celebrity gossip now. TMZ did report that Usher and Justin Bieber did have words at an Oscar party but this image that went viral is AI generated. Just look at Beyonce’s face! She does drink red wine but that comedy expression is computer generated.
This incident highlights a pivotal shift where AI-generated visuals have begun to outpace the traditional "seeing is believing" standard of celebrity gossip. Even when a grain of truth exists—such as the reported verbal exchange between two stars by a usually reliable outlet at a private Oscars after-party, synthetic media can now fabricate hyper-realistic "proof" that never occurred. Check your sources folks. Subscribe to reliable places, don’t waste your time on the BS and the conspiracy theories.
WHY THE BUFFY REVIVAL GOT CANNED (AND WHY THAT MIGHT NOT BE SUCH A BAD THING)

Buffy fans have spent the week grieving the news that the planned Hulu revival, Buffy: New Sunnydale helmed by Chloe Zhao, has been scrapped. Ultimately, Hulu pulled the plug due to creative differences between executives and the production team. Many feel a sense of loss for what could have been a modern evolution of the franchise but I can’t help but think this is the right choice.
If there is any doubt that this edition wasn’t working and would tarnish the legacy of the original seven seasons, then I am happy Hulu has walked away from something that would look like a hollow cash in.
Iconic shows are usually a product of their time that captured the world in that moment and to replicate it is like trying to put lightning in a bottle. The show ended well with a definitive conclusion where every potential slayer was activated, making a direct remake feel redundant when the universe is already so expanded.
Some folks have had success with revivals, shout outs go to Twin Peaks: The Return, Netflix’s Cobra Kai, Battlestar Galactica and even ABC’s The Connors. We all know that original IP has more chance of breaking through but if this gives space for something original to be commissioned then I’m happy as I have reboot fatigue. May these disappointing revivals of other legendary shows be a warning sign.
The promotional posters for bad remakes from left to right : Gossip Girl, Heroes Reborn, Charlie’s Angels & Knight Rider
Gossip Girl (HBO Max): The 2021 reboot was panned for being "style over substance." Critics and fans felt the new characters lacked the "deliciously mean" charm of the original, and revealing Gossip Girl's identity in the first episode killed the mystery.
Heroes Reborn (NBC): Much like the later seasons of the original, this revival was criticized for messy writing and failing to recreate the "event television" feel of the first season.
Charlie’s Angels (2011): This ABC reboot was cancelled after just four episodes. It was widely criticized for lacking the fun and chemistry that made the 70s original a hit.
Knight Rider (2008): Without David Hasselhoff and the "dumb charms" of the original, this version was slammed by critics as "sci-fi Cheese Whiz" and cancelled after one season.
PS I’m not including And Just Like That in this list, as I controversially enjoyed the show and still miss it. Sorry not sorry.
THE BACHELORETTE IMPLOSION: ALL YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Plus: Could Taylor Frankie Paul Face Jail (Yes, Really)?

I haven’t personally cared about The Bachelor or The Bachelorette for decades. But last year when ABC cast reality star Taylor Frankie Paul—the lightning rod of Hulu’s The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives— my ear pricked up and I was interested again. Bringing a controversial figure into a puritanical all American franchise captivated me, this was going to be messy and I commissioned a cover for Us Weekly, which I was editing at the time - since my departure they executed it perfectly. Now the world can see why I was intrigued… ABC canceled the entire season of the show just three days before its planned March 22 premiere. The unprecedented move followed a leaked 2023 video showing Paul physically attacking her ex-partner, Dakota Mortensen, in the presence of her child. The video was released following a new domestic abuse investigation of both Paul and Mortensen. Disney stated they will not move forward at this time to focus on supporting the family amid an ongoing domestic assault investigation.
The last time I watched the show was when I arrived in America in 2002 when I was absorbing everything I could about popular culture and this (alongside American Idol, Brad and Jen mania and Kelly and Regis) was very much core Americana. I interviewed Trista Rehn, the first Bachelorette, and we placed her and her husband Ryan Sutter on the cover, becoming the first celebrity weekly to give the franchise a cover. Since then I’ve been bored by the formulaic nature of the super successful show. It wasn’t aimed at me, but because of my job in mass market entertainment media I kept abreast of everything that was going on and assigned talented people enthralled by the show to make sure we covered it dynamically.
But with Paul’s casting, The Bachelor franchise wasn't just shaking the tree; it was uprooting the entire garden. For decades, The Bachelorette has survived on a rigid, almost sacred formula: fairytale escapism, a "pristine" lead, and the collective belief that the show is a search for true love. But as ratings for traditional linear TV soften, last year ABC made its most radical pivot yet with Paul.
1) So Who is Taylor Frankie Paul?
Taylor Frankie Paul represented a refreshing - if a little jarring departure from Bachelor Nations' leading protagonists. With three children and a backstory defined by "soft swinging" and viral "MomTok" drama, Taylor isn't a traditional protagonist; she is a disruptor. The show has successfully featured single mothers before, most notably Emily Maynard Johnson in Season 8. However, Emily’s narrative was rooted in a "tragic widow" archetype—a young mother seeking a father for her daughter, Ricki. It was a story of redemption that fit perfectly within the franchise’s moral compass. Paul’s story was very different as she had legal trouble in her background with a February 2023 arrest following a domestic altercation with her then-boyfriend, Dakota Mortensen. The incident, which was partially captured on bodycam and later aired on The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, led to several felony and misdemeanor charges.

2) Why Did Producers Switch Things Up?
Over the last five years, the Bachelor franchise has transitioned from a linear TV powerhouse to receiving Nielsen ratings that have reached historic lows. But the franchise's total reach has often remained stable or even grown through delayed viewing on Hulu and ABC.com and all important engagement on social media. These platforms have different viewers. By bringing Paul in, the producers attempted a high-stakes crossover similar to the success seen on Dancing with the Stars, hoping to capture the massive audience that made Mormon Wives a streaming titan. Jen Affleck and Whitney Leavitt’s 2025 appearance on DWTS made it the most watched series of the show in a decade. This was believed to be from drawing on the massive popularity of the Hulu show - it was the streamer's most-watched unscripted premiere of 2024, surpassing The Kardashians, and season 3 drew 651 million minutes viewed within its first four days, according to Nielsen.

3) Was Paul a Good Fit For The Franchise?
The fundamental danger with this casting was the dilution of the prize. The Bachelorette works because the lead is framed as a catch worth fighting for. The Bachelorette has always been about projection and fantasy. So producers had to assess, will a crossover star bring her new audience and buzz with her and not alienate the existing puritanical mid-west audience? The success of Hulu's SLOMW made Taylor a star, but it also meant she brought an audience that expects drama, not necessarily romance. Producers would have known that this was a risk but took a deep breath and took it. I can empathize with new producer Scott Teti, the new showrunner for The Bachelorette, who presumably made the decision to cast Paul. I have run mainstream brands for my entire career and sometimes wanted to shake things up but you can not do this outside of what your audience wants and expects. We will never know how the audience will have taken to Paul but this was a big risk.
4) Was There An Initial Backlash?
A Bachelor Nation contestant Sydney Warner sparked a viral debate by calling Taylor Frankie Paul’s casting "disrespectful" to the franchise. Warner questioned the show’s morals unrelated to the domestic dispute after watching SLOMW, suggesting the network prioritized ratings over the lead’s mental well-being because Taylor showed signs of still being in her toxic cycle with Mortenson on season 4 and even allegedly spent the night with him the night before she left to film The Bachelorette. Warner argued the move felt like a "desperate" attempt to save a dying series. Critics voiced outrage over elevating someone with a history of intimate partner abuse to a romantic lead. Elyse Dehlbom (a season 23 contestant) expressed frustration that ABC would choose a lead who has been physically abusive to a partner, calling it a dangerous precedent for a dating show.
5) Why Did They Cancel The Full Season? Isn’t Drama Good For Reality TV?
ABC and Disney cited the welfare of the family as their primary reason for the cancellation. The leaked footage, which featured her young child crying during a violent altercation, sparked massive public concern. Executives stated that continuing to air the season was impossible while Taylor’s family navigates an active domestic assault investigation. ABC’s parent company, Disney prioritizes a family-friendly image —which aligns with Disney’s public commitment to family welfare. There was a conflict between ABC’s desperate need for Gen Z ratings (via "MomTok") and Disney’s non-negotiable brand safety. The cancellation wasn't just a moral choice; it was a corporate risk-mitigation strategy when the messy drama crossed the line into a documented crime involving a child.

The video of the 2023 incident that was leaked to TMZ
Advertisers were also at risk as brands often feel they cannot remain neutral in "cancel culture" crises; Cinnabon officially terminated their collaborations with both The Bachelorette and The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, before the show’s cancellation stating the allegations against Taylor "no longer align with our brand values”. So continuing the season would have risked possible consumer boycotts and permanent irreparable reputational damage to the "Bachelor Nation" franchise.
Also from a viewer perspective, The Bachelorette audience needs to invest in the lead protagonist finding love. If the audience believes the lead is too chaotic or insincere, the fight for her heart feels meaningless. When the lead comes with heavy off-screen baggage — specifically the current domestic dispute investigations — the core fairytale begins to crumble. People would no longer be tuning in to see if Taylor finds "The One," but rather to see if she can survive the spotlight while her personal life is under a microscope.
6) Will The Show Ever Air?
ABC have cancelled the show right now but it is unclear if the season is permanently scrapped or if it will ever be released on another platform like Hulu. Paul is in court on April 7 with Mortensen and this will be the first time anyone hears her side of the story related to these new allegations, and whatever the judge decides could affect if ABC decides to move forward with the show airing later.
7) What Was The Show Like?
Sources close to the show tell Celebrity Intelligence “the season was actually a lot more traditional than you would expect. There was no extra drama, it had the same tone as a regular season. They slotted Taylor into the franchise like they would any other Bachelorette.”
8) Who was the "Winner" and What Happened To Them?
It has widely been reported following a story by spoiler supreme Reality Steve that contestant Doug Mason — is Paul’s final pick. He has spoken out since the drama saying, “In light of everything that has happened, I am just sending prayers to Taylor because that was her moment and her moment was blocked. All we can do right now is just be hopeful, and I am headed off to run to watch the sunrise.” Despite getting engaged during the finale, the relationship reportedly lasted only one month. Reality Steve also reported that they broke up in January 2026, allegedly because Taylor could not move on from her ex, Mortensen, but that is not confirmed.
9) Is There a Morality Clause in Bachelorette’s Contracts?
After working with reality TV contestants for years many confirm that they are almost always subject to morality clauses in their contracts. These provisions are designed to protect the network's brand and financial investment if a star's behavior becomes scandalous or socially objectionable. ABC will be assessing how they proceed with Paul. An insider says “ABC are very protective of their talent and certainly were last week with Taylor when things broke but that can change very quickly.” These morality requirements often extend from the start of filming through the entire period the show is airing. At this stage ABC have said they canceled the season because of the video that went public of the 2023 altercation, however they must have been aware of the altercation itself as it was reported on and even featured on Hulu’s SLOMW. So any action related to a morality clause would likely pertain to the new allegations that are still being investigated by police.
10) Does Taylor Still Get Paid?
Bachelorettes are rumored to make between $100,000 and $250,000 per season. Because Paul is famous her fee will be on the higher end of this. However if ABC invokes the reality clause this fee could be disputed.
Clockwise from top left: Contestants Malik, Doug, Shane, Brandon, Aaron, Michael B, Marcus and Johnnie.
11) What About The Contestants?
Contestants on The Bachelor and The Bachelorette are not paid a salary or stipend for their appearance. While they do not receive pay for the main show, they may earn money later via social media endorsements or by appearing on spin-offs like Bachelor In Paradise. So many are grumbling that they have wasted time and won’t be getting a boost in social followers and new careers as personal training influencers.
12) What Does It Mean for The Secret Life Of Mormon Wives?
Off screen drama like this is usually a great thing for a reality show. Real Housewives producers would eat this up and make it central to a whole season of television but this show is now complicated by the colliding metaverse of the Bachelorette and the ethics of the entire network. This is particularly pertinent as the drama kicked off on the second day on the job for Disney’s new CEO Josh D'Amaro, who will be looking to make confident decisions. And stepping away from Paul completely might be the most sensible thing but it will all be dependent on the police investigation. Filming for season 5 of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives has been paused indefinitely because of the assault and People has reported that the cast is furious and distancing themselves from Paul following the recent domestic violence investigation and the surfacing of a 2023 assault video. As many Housewives know, If a cast doesn’t want to film with you, it’s tough to continue on a reality show.
Whitney Leavitt is currently starring in Chicago on Broadway and has indicated her desire to move on from the show, Demi Engemann quit the show mid way through last season to prioritize her mental health after claims on Vanderpump Villa. Mikayla Matthews, Mayci Neeley, Jessi Ngatikaura and Miranda McWhorter were filming season 5 when it was paused.

13) What is Paul’s Status With The Police? Could She Face Jail Time?
Paul and Mortensen have to wait to see if new charges will be filed in the new investigation. Taylor is currently on a plea in abeyance for her 2023 felony aggravated assault charge. A major question is whether this new investigation will revoke her probation, potentially leading to a felony conviction and jail time. If the investigation finds actions that go against her agreement (which includes that she have no new legal violations) with the court for her probation it could be revoked, which would automatically trigger a third-degree felony conviction and potential jail time of up to five years. Because Taylor is currently under a plea in abeyance in Utah for a 2023 aggravated assault charge, the legal threshold for revocation is lower than for a standard criminal conviction. In Utah, a plea in abeyance is essentially a "guilty plea held in a drawer".
14) Will ABC Consider Scrapping The Franchise Completely?
Theoretically everything is on the table but… HELL NO! Yes, all eyes are on ABC and its facing intense pressure with industry speculation questioning its survival but this franchise is an American staple like Coca Cola, you don’t give up on its brand equity because of one badly cast contestant. By scrapping the series, taking the financial loss (estimated at $30 million) they have done the right thing to cleanse the franchise. It has weathered storms before ( lack of diversity and "toxic" behind-the-scenes work culture, leading to the departure of showrunners and producers) and we have had 50 (yes, really) seasons of The Bachelor and The Bachelorette with high stakes romance so that will outweigh this dramatic blip.
15) So Has Another Season Been Commissioned?
A 30th season of The Bachelor had been previously slated for 2025-2026, but it was replaced by this version of The Bachelorette so it is unclear what will come next. This scandal directly affects this season as producers usually cast one of the finalists from the previous season for The Bachelor so they will have to go back to the drawing board/ casting coach to come up with a plan. Former cast members and critics are urging for a complete overhaul of the show's vetting, casting, and safety protocols, with some suggesting a long hiatus is necessary. I’m sure producers would relish some time to get their plans concrete but I predict there won’t be much appetite for experimentation with this franchise going forward.
By casting a Hulu star on ABC, they tried to import an audience that values authenticity over the "fairytale." When that authenticity included a violent video, the fairytale became impossible to sell. There will be a return to the family values of a handsome prince or princess figure looking for love. A new CEO for the Disney corporation will not have an appetite for risk after last week’s debacle. It is clear as day now that this casting choice was the moment The Bachelorette lost its soul. The show was built on the "Fantasy Suite," but Taylor Frankie Paul brought reality TV drama and the reality of a troubled background fully documented on TikTok and Hulu that destroyed any possibility of fantasy and projection. In the end, ABC didn’t just lose a season; they lost the illusion that has sustained them for 20 years. ABC may be holding a wilted rose right now but it will flourish again.
Thank you for getting to the end! See you next week.
